Here comes trouble!

Originally uploaded by alfagee

Petey went with grace, dignity, and calm. He was truly ready and it lightens my heart to know he’s somewhere where there’s endless bacon, big puddles of sunshine perfect for napping, toys to play with, big cats to pester, and no more pain.

The kind, loving messages you sent throughout this journey, but especially last night, helped me stay strong for Petey.

I will be forever grateful for your love and support.

Please hug your kitties extra hard for me, raise a glass to toast the Best Boy in the World, and eat more bacon! Petey would have wanted it that way.

Our Final Journey

Petey At 6 Months

Petey is having a terrible, terrible night. He’s not eating. He can’t get comfortable. He’s hiding.

And when I look in his eyes, I see that the fight is gone.

He’s ready for the last leg of the journey. And I’m ready to help him take that last step enveloped in love.

It’s the last gift I can give this little cat, who has been my joy for the past 6 years.

Thank you for supporting us through the many peaks and valleys of this journey.

Send lots of love our way in the morning. And remember Petey as the pure, exuberant spirit he’s always been — like the kitten in the big cat’s body.

I leave you with this picture of kitten Petey. It’s always been one of my favorites.

Sad Petey News

Petey just didn’t seem right tonight — he was lethargic and his breathing seemed labored. So, I rushed him to the emergency vet.

He has fluid in his chest again, which suggests his cancer is no longer in remission.

He’s in an oxygen cage and the e-vet is going to tap the fluid, so he can breathe more comfortably.

I’m going to pick him up early in the morning and bring him to his regular vet so we can get a better idea what’s going on.

If you can spare a kind thought for my little cat, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Smiling, Gassy Petey

Smiling Petey

You may have noticed that the updates have been slow to appear this week. Apologies, loyal readers.

I’ve been sick for the past two weeks. Petey’s had a rough few days, too. But we’re both on the mend.

Be thankful that this blog doesn’t feature Smell-o-Vision. Petey’s had the bowels of doom this week.

How much stink could that sweet little cat produce, you ask? Enough for 2 adults with colds/sinus infections to consider pitching a tent and sleeping outdoors.

Notice his little smile in that picture? That usually lures me in to give him a belly rub. Not this week, though. I value my olfactory system too much for that.

Petey made it through is first chemo session “like a champ.” He even had a brief, illicit romance with a spider monkey named Ginger. They stared longingly at each other from cages across the hospital suite. Alas, it was not meant to be.

And all was right in his little Petey world for oh, about 12 hours.

There’s nothing like the sound of a cat screaming and wretching at 3:00 am to wake you right up. Suffice to say that Petey is not a good puker. He makes Chinese opera death wails to announce the impending yarkage. And then he tries to execute the simultaneous run-and-puke maneuver on the Persian carpet. Never on the hardwood.

All this, and the Russian judge still only gave him a 7 for technical difficulty, and a 3 for style.

We’ve spent the rest of the week struggling with eating. I have opened every variety of stinky gross cat food known to man. Zip, zilch, nada. Not a morsel would pass his lips.

Finally, we hit on London Broil with lots of meat juice. But just a teaspoon.

Now, we’re coming off a 3-day deli turkey bender (the turkey slices must be quartered, placed on a paper towel, and served to Le Petit Prince in the spot where the dry food bowl usually resides). It’s like living with Paris Hilton, only not quite as dumb.

What comes after the turkey? So far, it looks like tuna is in the lead. But, I’m still rooting for roast beef. That’s easier for me to stomach at 7:00 am.
